Arts Strategy for South Lakeland 2005 - 2010

An Arts Strategy for South Lakeland 2005-2010 has been produced by the South Lakeland Arts Strategy Steering Group working with consultants Phyllida Shaw, Keith Allen and Peter Booth.

The strategy was commissioned by South Lakeland District Council and supported by Arts Council North West and Cumbria County Council and is the result of a six month period of research and consultation.

The development of the  strategy was proposed in the Local Strategic Partnership's 'A Cultural Strategy for South Lakeland' which stated that "an issue as important and far reaching as the arts in the cultural life of the district required separate detailed consideration".

The arts strategy offers a clear framework for the development of the arts in the district over the next five years and will be implemented alongside the Cultural Strategy for South Lakeland.

The strategy document is in three parts.
  • The first part provides the context for the arts strategy and opportunities for the arts in South Lakeland.
  • The second part proposes a vision for 2010 and has 3 aims and 13 objectives that will help realise that vision.
  • The third part illustrates the links between the Arts, Community and Cultural Strategies for South Lakeland and provides an overview of the arts in the district.

The strategy will be interesting to different people in different ways but its implementation should benefit South Lakeland as a whole.  The strategy is for everyone who is involved in the arts in South Lakeland and is not for a single organisation.

It is a working document and provides the starting point for the action planning process which is the next step now that the strategy is in place.
