Housing Strategy

South Lakeland District Council produces a range of housing strategies which set out the particular housing needs of the district and how these will be addressed over a period of time.

Cumbria Housing Strategy

The first Cumbria-wide Housing Strategy was launched in October 2006. This replaces the individual strategies produced by SLDC and the other districts in recent years. Cumbria is leading the field in the north west as this is the first time that several local authorities and their partners have worked jointly to tackle housing issues in one part of the region. The government has welcomed this approach and endorsed the document as being ‘fit for purpose’ – again, the first in the north west to receive this approval.

The strategy will tackle five key issues which have been identified through research. All five are important in Cumbria though some are a higher priority in particular areas of the county. They are:
  • Shortage of Affordable Housing
  • Creating Decent Homes and Environments
  • Housing the homeless
  • Regeneration
  • Homes with support or additional facilities
