Waste and Recycling Guide - G

Garden Waste

Green Waste

Garden waste rotting in landfill sites generates methane gas, which is a contributor to global warming.

We collect green garden waste from the kerbside. Alternatively take larger amounts to the collection points at any of the four Household Waste Recycling Centres in South Lakeland.

You could also get a home compost bin and use your own waste to make soil improver for your garden.

Find out more about composting.

Glass Bottles and JarsGlass Bottles

Your blue recycling box is the most convenient way to recycle your glass bottles and jars.

There are also collection banks at recycling centres throughout the district

Please rinse out all bottles and jars and remove the lids, which cannot be recycled.

Please note Pyrex, window glass and drinking glasses cannot be recycled, .

Broken glass should be wrapped in newspaper and put into your household waste bin.

Glassware

Glassware cannot be recycled, however many charity shops accept glassware in a good condition for re-sale.

Greetings Cards

Birthday, Christmas and other greetings cards can be placed in your blue paper recycling box.

Gypsum

Plasterboard, plaster and gypsum, that is not attached to other waste such as bricks, should be segregated before being deposited at a Household Waste Recycling Centre. The nearest sites are at Flusco near Penrith and at Barrow.
If you have any queries regarding the disposal of plasterboard please telephone either Cumbria County Council on 0845 055 1118 pr the Environment Agency on 0870 850 6506.
