Shop Front Improvement Scheme

Shop front schemes are now available in Broughton-in-Furness, Coniston, Dent, Grange-over-Sands, Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Milnthorpe,  Sedbergh and Ulverston. Thanks to grants from South Lakeland District Council local parish councils are administrating the scheme apart from Kendal where South Lakeland District Council manage the grants. South Lakeland District Council have approved and paid 36 grants totalling grant funding of £44,764, which has been match funded by businesses to the value of £125,230.

Aims

Shop Front Improvement Scheme aims to enhance the image of our market towns.

The grants cover front renovation and decoration, new signage and replacement of historical features including lighting. The main objectives of the scheme:

To improve business frontages including shops, commercial businesses and social enterprises.

Enhance the appearance and appeal of the town to visitors, customers and the local population.

To preserve and enhance the special characters of the Conservation area, it’s listed buildings and other buildings of public importance.

Assist towards encouraging further inward investment

Stimulate business and consumer confidence.

Funding

Grants are available for up to a maximum of 40% of the work to be undertaken. Grants are allocated on a first come first served basis provided eligibility has been met. Retrospective applications for work already being completed cannot be considered.

Shop Front Grant Info

To the end of December 2011 we have awarded 37 grants towards the improvement of shop fronts in Kendal, this amounts to £45,225. The shops have contributed £125,114 a total investment of £170,339. This being the shop owners contributions to their improvements.
