South Lakeland District Council has been leading a project with its partners to create a new scheme for Waterhead at the northern end of the lake. Chaired by Cllr Graham Vincent, the steering group  included businesses and residents, Lakes Parish Council, Cumbria County Council, LDNPA, Cumbria Tourism and Ambleside Civic Trust who have been working with consultants TEP to create a deliverable scheme, which will sympathetically reflect Waterhead’s world-class surroundings.

Three possible options were developed following extensive public consultation.  These were exhibited in Ambleside Library and residents and businesses were invited to come along and select the design they preferred.

The Waterhead Bay project aims to improve this important destination which is one of the principal entrance to Ambleside and the gateway to the northern lakes,

The next stage of the process involves seeking funding to develop the project. Funding is required to develop detailed designs and costings together with an environmental and access impact study. Negotiations with landowners and tenants would also need to take place as the plan moves towards the submission of a formal planning application.

Jayne Kendall, SLDC’s Economic Development Manager, said: “The aim of this project is to ensure that Waterhead as a destination is sensitively improved and enhanced to reflect its world class surroundings”
