New Road Common Development Timeline
August 2011
Ground contaminiation testing will be carried out on the south
side of New Road adjacent to the River Kent during 11 - 16 Sep.
September 2011
SLDC Cabinet agreed to proceed with the projet and a planning
application and deregistration application will be submitted later
in the year.
May 2011
A ground contamination test will be carried out within the next
couple of months as part of the planning application. This means
the south side of the common (next to the River’s edge) will be
fenced off from all cars to allow heavy machinery to access the
area and for health and safety procedures to be followed. The
council will advise users of the area in plenty of time.
March 2011
Final designs will be published on the SLDC website and
circulated to the media in early March.
Final designs will be submitted to SLDC Cabinet and approval
sought to submit a Deregistration Application to the Secretary of
State at the end of March.
February 2011
Feedback from the questionnaires will be collated and analysed
by independent research company.
January 2011
Public consultation on designs final designs begins.
December 2010
Designs developed from concept stage. Public
exhibition being arranged for 10 Jan - 4 Feb 2011.

Kendal Futures commissioned Taylor Young Ltd to develop the
Kendal Public Realm Design Framework and the design of three key
areas in Kendal including New Road.
SLDC Cabinet agreed the recommendations to develop New Road
Common as a recreational space
Report compiled for the SLDC Cabinet based on the outcome of
feedback analysis with recommendations for the future of New Road
Common
