Kirkland Enhancement Scheme
The Kirkland project which was due to start on the
11th January will now start on the18th January. The
delay is because of current weather conditions and cold
temperatures. Materials including concrete, sand, block
paving etc cannot be laid when the ground is frozen.
A traffic management plan will be drawn up to
keep disruption to an absolute minimum and temporary loading bays
will be available to traders throughout the works. The traffic
management plan will be co-ordinated to limit the impact on
motorists and businesses while the works are carried out. Works
will be undertaken in sections under a single lane closure with
spaces left for service vehicles. Pedestrian access will be
maintained both along the street and to properties and
businesses.
By improving the ‘streetscape’ through
widening pavements, new surfacing, improving lighting and
introducing new seating areas the scheme will encourage visitors
and residents to “discover rather than bypass” Kirkland.
The Kirkland Enhancement Scheme is helping to
deliver some of the recommendations from the Kirkland Pedestrian
Audit. As a southern entrance to Kendal, Kirkland is often
dominated by traffic and the recent Kirkland Pedestrian Audit has
identified more can be done to make the area safer for pedestrians
and encourage more browsers and buyers.
Work will last eight weeks and a detailed
works programme will be published early next week on www.southlakeland.gov.uk/kirkland
