Kendal Signage Project
SLDC, as part of the Kendal Public Realm
Framework process, has started a major overhaul of the maps in the
town centre to help visitors make the most of their stay.
This has been addressed by installing modern up-to-date
maps in a sympathetic design and using of local
materials. These are located in key areas around the
town. The general design theme can now then be adopted in
other elements of street furniture in future phases, which could
address signage, benches etc.
This dovetails with the Public Realm Framework currently being
developed by Kendal Futures and complements the work being done by
Lakes Line Community Rail and Cumbria County Council.
Objectives
- Welcome visitors to Kendal allowing them to find tourist
information quickly and easily.
- Enhance visitor experience by providing quality dis
plays and
clear mapping in key sites including rail and bus
stations.
- Promote availability of public transport.
- Encourage visitors to explore the whole of Kendal instead
of visiting specific shopping areas or attractions.
- Provide information on the history of Kendal
- Show visitors how easy Kendal is to explore on foot, thus
helping the environment, easing traffic congestion and
incorporating gentle exercise.
- Replace outdated town maps and fingerposts, which are beyond
their useful life span, due to traffic alterations, town centre
developments and vandalism.
